When burned, sage is said to clear out negative energy. Palo santo, when burned, is said to bring in positive energy.
When burning the sage, open the windows in the space you're cleansing to release the negativity. Then close the window before burning the palo santo. Palo santo will take longer to catch fire than the sage, just keep holding the flame to it. With both, after lighting blow out the flame and let the smoke fill your space. Before you ask, yes you can cleanse yourself! Simply circle yourself with the smoke of both the sage & palo santo.
